And another medal ! It's beginning to look as if medals to the Bedfordshire Yeomanry are quite common. This one is the British War Medal to Private 1773 William Sargent which was on a dealer's list. William was born in Bedford in 1890, in a large family that originated from Turvey, including his brother Sidney, who also served in the BY. William went to France in January 1916 after enlisting in May 1915. His service record hasn't survived but he did, thankfully. He stayed in the Bedford area and died in 1963, aged 73. Can you provide any more information about William or the Sargent family ?

We have three Sargents on the Turvey war memorial from WW1. I had presumed they were related but researching them has shown they all had different parents living in Turvey and Sharpenhoe. Also local elders I have spoken to don't think there is a connection either. One is Sydney Sargent (brother of William) whom you list as serving in the Bedfordshire Yeomanry. I have him as 2nd Btn Bedfordshire Regiment KIA 11th July 1916. Could it be he transferred from the Bedfordshire Yeomanry?

My father was Sydney Arthur Sargent who served with A Squadron of the Bedfordshire Yeomanry in France from 1915. In 1918, when yeomanries were disbanded, transferred to King's Own 8th Irish Hussars. I think the Sydney that you have KIA was another one. Fortunately my dad survived, as did his brother William. I grew up in Kempston, and my father and his brother William lived in different houses in the same street. William b. 1890, d. 1963, Sydney b. 1893 d, 1952. Another brother, Thomas, KIA, 3rd Ypres, with 8th Suffolks. All from Turvey family. Am willing to provide more info if required (photo of Sydney on horseback prior to embarkation for France, etc.). I've tried to have Thomas's name put on Turvey memorial, but have been told that because the family moved to Bedford when he was 3 or 4, he does not qualify!

I have deleted some comments (including mine !) as we seemed to be heading into comment about other soldiers. I think we have established that there are 2 Sydney/Sidneys and that one was killed in action with the Bedfords. 9/11/2014 05:00:24 am
Students should make plans for their activities. They should make plan first then they should practice on their plan. Comments are closed.
